Music
At St. Mary’s there is a fine tradition of music making. We have two choirs. One leads the worship at the 10.15 Eucharist, at which there is always a choir anthem. The Evening Choir leads a sung 1662 Evensong at 6pm. Each month, usually on the third Sunday, the Choir sings a full cathedral style evensong, to cathedral standard. The choirs happily combine to sing at major services and carol services. Also, there is a small orchestra with a variety of instruments which leads the 10.15 All Age/Family worship on the third Sunday.
There are two choir practices each week, one at 7.15pm on Friday and the other at 5pm on Sunday. The orchestra rehearses at 9.15am on the third Sunday. The range of music is wide – from plainsong to 21st Century works. Hymns are both ‘ancient and modern’.
The Church is fortunate to possess a fine three manual organ which stood, originally, in St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London. It was restored in 1995 with modern technological aids and attracts a great deal of interest.
We see our main development strategy as encouraging growth. We are always looking for new members in all departments. Belonging to a choir or music group gives wonderful opportunities for performing in public. It is also an opportunity to gain expert tuition and gain or improve musical skills.
